Original exhibition poster, Yvonne Lambert Gallery, 1988
Regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Jean-Michel Basquiat came to prominence in the 80s as part of the Neo-expressionism movement. His art focused on dichotomies such as wealth versus poverty, integration versus segregation, and inner versus outer experience. He died at just 27 years old, but left a lasting legacy. At a Sotheby's auction in 2017, his painting, Untitled, sold for $110.5 million.
